How To Use The Facebook Ad Library For Product Research

The Facebook Ad Library is free and shows every ad your competitors are running. Here is how to read it properly and what its limits are.

Meta publishes every active ad on Facebook and Instagram. Anyone can look, no account required. For product research it is the single best free tool that exists, and most people use it wrong.

What it shows

What it does not show

Set expectations here, because this is where people waste hours:

How to read it properly

  1. Sort your attention by start date. The oldest still-running ad on a page is that page's proven winner. Study that one.
  2. Count variations. A page running fifteen versions of one concept has found something that works and is scaling it. That concept is worth understanding.
  3. Watch only the first three seconds. That is where the money is made and it is the part you can learn fastest from.
  4. Check back in two weeks. Ads that survive a second look are confirmed winners. Ads that vanished were tests that failed — useful too.

Worth knowing: the official Ad Library API is far more limited than the public website. It only returns political and social-issue ads, and mostly for EU and UK audiences. If you read that it can pull US commercial ad data, that is out of date — it cannot, and no amount of ID verification changes it.

Stop guessing which second kills your ad.

AdDoctor connects to your Meta ad account and shows you exactly where viewers scroll away — and which competitor stores are running ads in your niche right now.
